It’s a pleasure to announce that my present long-term renters, a high tech-employed Russian couple with a cat and a parrot, are ready to share space in the very center of Moscow. Their motivation is not only $$ but a chance to practice their English, so the rate will be below market, or something like what it was nearly 10 years ago, $25/person/night for a place to stay, with Wi-Fi and a washing machine, in the very center of Moscow, 5-7 min. walk from Red Square. For those who are new here is a reminder of the arrangement:
I honestly meant this outgrowth of the cheap-moscow.com project to be a compilation of notes on **my** Moscow. Things practical, charming, or not immediately apparent. Damn be the day when I installed this JetPack counter that revealed that 95% of search phrases that took people to where.cheap-moscow.com have “prostitution” in them.
WILL CONSIDER SELLING THIS SITE TO ANYONE WHOSE BUSINESS BETTER MATCHES ENQUIRIES THIS RESOURCE ATTRACTS.
www.gkh-topograph.narod.ru/index.htm – Most comprehensive even though slightly outdated site on Koptevo, an area east from Leningradskoye Shesse from Metro Voykovskaya. Name “Koptevo” probably derives from from “копоть” (“soot”) because it started as a factory suburb of Moscow. Even now, when factories have been converted to offices, the district is populated by ageing working class type. Recommended if you are looking for authenticity and a trip back in time.
Intercity buses from Moscow: www.busgo.ru. Think of $10-something per 100 miles as about the average cost. Or, if you are a large group, hiring a bus in the city will cost you $50-100 per hour, and up to $2 per mile for long hauls.
Cruise ships from Moscow: www.starflot.ru/cruise. Prices from $200 to $2000 per person per day, eg. the cheapest of the cheap one week cruises will cost you $1400.
International activity here is generally down. The School of Russian and Asian Studies is one of very few establishments of the kind still kicking at the time of the Magnitsky list, ban on adoptions, introduction of “foreign agent” status, and other signs of iron curtain restoration. Active both in Moscow and the rest of FSU space.
Receptor, 10 Bolshoi Kozikhinsky pereulok, Metro Tverskaya (Pushkinskaya, Chekhovskaya), (495) 626 6816, www.cafereceptor.ru, open noon to 11pm.
Prices “moderate”, Moscow standard.
Neat site too. Very rarely do I see anything I like. Theirs, while being “with a difference”, failed to assault my senses. Hat off.
Seems that it has become fashionable in the expat community, and the question of where to find made it to the list of “top 5000”.
It pops up all over the place in an unpredictable manner but you will **always** find it in the Old Believers shop at Rogozhsky Poselok 35(?).
It is next door to the Old Believers cafe which is open to the public regardless of faith and is highly recommended (a) for Russian food properly understood and (b)as a place that turns near-totally vegan Wednesdays, Fridays, and during other periods, usually preceding celebrations.
Recommended for fresh vegetables or soup of light/yellowish colour **after** it’s been poured into plates both as seasoning and decoration. Milder than regular salt.
For years I’ve been getting an on-and-off urge to get a scooter or even a motorcycle but a timely cash flow problem or a period of skepticism about anything this world offers have been saving me from such a silliness. I have been however collecting info on the subject on motorcycles and scooters in Moscow, and will share it with you. Here is the first bit from an old business card from my 2+ year old to-be-sorted pile::

That’s near Metro Ulitsa Podbelskogo, close to a large bicycle/scooter/motorcycle market in Sokolniki.
MORE TO COME
AT THE MOMENT NO LICENSE WHATSOEVER IS REQUIRED TO OPERATE A SCOOTER, AND YOU CAN STILL GET A REAL SMALL MOTORCYCLE (100-150CC) WITH SCOOTER DOCUMENTS! (Valid as of January 2013)
I’m regularly asked about Russian brides. My advice that the only way to get one that will last is to integrate into local life till you run into your true mate. No way around it. You need to take time, to be active, and to let the random nature of this universe work in your favour.
This advice however is nearly always rejected. I understand. A successful professional like you expects to pay and have quality product delivered. Fast. None of that sentimental crap. Uncertainty is not for your. Of course. So I asked around and, based on what your fellow Russian bride seekers say, will recommend
No, I don’t know of even one long-term success. But the above folks will get you dates. No, they don’t have many scammers, which seems to be your main concern. Easy, safe. Happy dating.
After you are over this agency stage you may want talk to me. But I have no magic solution and will say that, despite relative excess of women in this land where men tend to die young or otherwise fall out of circulation, you need to participate in local life and let things happen. See the Russian Brides corner in my www.oldmanfriday.com project.
While on the subject you may want to request my list of single women up for grabs from among my acquaintances. A somewhat outdated list is at www.oldmanfriday.com too under Services > Private > “Russian brides”. A small donation once in a while will encourage me to regularly look around to see who can be added. NONE WERE RECEIVED EVEN THOUGH I KNOW OF AT LEAST TWO WHO HAPPILY BEDDED WOMEN FROM THIS LIST. SOMEWHAT DISCOURAGING.
That’s my attempt at a logo for the “Russian Brides” project. Made a long time ago, ~1998-2000, when I was still able to poke fun at it all.
PS. Olesya too approved the above three as “recommended”. Especially Elena’s Models. I too like Elena’s Models, partly because of a permanent long-term client addicted to this agency. He gets several women from there, can’t decide which one he wants, looses them all, and comes to me to cry and to plot his next cycle of getting the love of his life. Women cooperate too. After joining the agency they quickly learn that men are replaceable, increase their expectations and reduce their error tolerance in others. I’m the one who benefits financially even though what little is left of my immortal soul keeps on eroding. This client goes through one cycle in 2-3 years. Before I had a fellow who came here four times to get his bride. Same procedure, same benefit for me. I love these agencies.
PPS. Speaking of Olesya, the best use for her would be to get her to provide guidance and counseling. Most of you need it but few want. So she forced to do things as stupid as keeping banners of dating and flower delivery agencies on her site. And she asked me to post one here since she gets I guess 10-15% of what you pay. I wish you’d hire her to do the delivery, to try to strike a chat with your friend, and to do a hidden interview under the guise of bringing flowers. But you won’t. So just click on this frigging banner and proceed to order your basket:
